Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Hua Lianyou on Hunger Strike for Twelve Months

June 20, 2013 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Tianjin

(Minghui.org) Mr. Hua Lianyou, a Falun Gong practitioner from the Beichen District of Tianjin, was arrested on April 24, 2012. On May 23, 2012, he started a hunger strike to protest the persecution, which has lasted for over twelve months.

Mr. Hua Lianyou's wife visited him on May 29, 2013. He looked emaciated, had no energy to talk and had trouble breathing. His wife demanded the immediate release of Mr. Hua based on his health condition. The prison authorities have not replied to her. She questioned Wang Cunyong from the Beichen District 610 Office as to why he had mistreated Mr. Hua to such an extent. Wang replied it was because Mr. Hua “didn't show the right attitude” when talking to him.

When two defense lawyers from Beijing, hired by Mr. Hua's family, came to the court on the morning of September 11, the court officials only allowed them and Mr. Hua's children to enter. They lied to the other family members, saying that they would be allowed to enter after the trial started. However, the other family members were not allowed to enter until 10:30 a.m. Through constant inquires, they learned that the Beichen Court officials had left the court by going through an underground parking garage, and went to the Zhuoyan Ciji Hospital and secretly held the trial there. They sentenced the bedridden Mr. Hua Lianyou to seven years in prison. On October 9, Mr. Hua was sent to Binhai Prison. On October 14, Li Guoyu, deputy head of the Binhai Prison, directed Yu, the deputy head of the Prison Hospital, to force-feed Mr. Hua.

Mr. Hua was too weak to walk by December 2012 and was forcefully put on an IV. When his life was in danger on December 7, prison officials transferred him to Ankang Hospital in order to shift responsibility.

Mr. Hua's family found him extremely weak and pale when they visited him in Ankang Hospital. Mr. Hua told his family with a weak voice his reason for launching a hunger strike, which was to protest the persecution. His family demanded his release. The prison authorities will respond only when someone is near death and meets the required criteria. Only then do they grant a medical parole. But the prison authorities did not clarify what this required criteria is.

Mr. Hua is still in Ankang Hospital. Wang, Gao, and other guards monitor him around the clock and force-feed him three or four times a day. His family, friends, colleagues and neighbors are deeply concerned about his well-being. Mr. Hua's eighty-year-old father worries about him every day, but dares not visit him because he is afraid of being persecuted.
