(Minghui.org) According to incomplete data, sixteen Falun Gong practitioners in medical professions, including physicians and nurses, were detained and persecuted in Beijing Women's Prison between 2000 and 2013.
Obstetrician
Dr. Li Chaoran was a obstetrician at Chinese Army General Hospital. In 2001, Dr. Li visited a fellow practitioner and talked about wanting to go to Tiananmen Square to voice her feelings about the injustice of the persecution of Falun Gong that started in 1999. As a result, Dr. Li, 68, was sentenced to four years in prison by the Military Court. She was jailed in ward nine in Beijing Women's Prison. Dr. Li was made to sit straight on a small stool for many hours a day, and forced to watch government propaganda and write “reports on her thoughts.” She was also forced to pack chopsticks.
Acupuncturist
Dr. Wang Anlin, 65, was a former acupuncture physician at Beijing Teacher's University Hospital. Dr. Wang was sentenced to a five-year term because she was outspoken about the truth of the persecution. She was beaten by police, which resulted in her body being covered with black and blue bruises. Dr. Wang's older sister, Ms. Wang Anxiu, died as a result of the persecution.
Associate Professor
Dr. Dan Ling was one of the eleven experts who conducted a government study on the health benefits of Falun Gong in 1998. She spent nearly a decade in Beijing Women's Prison. Dr. Dan graduated with a Master's degree from Beijing Medical University. She was an associate professor of Histology and Embryology at China Union Medical College.
Dr. Dan received numerous “Outstanding Teacher” awards, but was forced to stop teaching and later terminated from the school after the persecution began in 1999. In October 1999, Dr. Dan was arrested and sent to section 14 of the Beijing Police Department. She later left home to avoid being arrested again. She was arrested in Fujian Province in August 2002 for making pamphlets with information about the persecution of Falun Gong. She was sentenced to twelve years in prison. She was 46 years old when she was sent to ward nine in Beijing Women's Prison. Dr. Dan's husband divorced her for fear of being persecuted himself.
GP
Dr. Yu Peiling was a graduate of Beijing Medical School. She was a clinician at Beijing Friendship Hospital before she was send to prison. She was sentenced three times, serving a total of ten years in prison since the persecution of Falun Gong started.
Dr. Yu was twice imprisoned in Beijing Women's Prison. She was 34 years old when she was sentenced to three years in 2000, for calling for justice for Falun Gong. She was held in ward nine. She was once not allowed to sleep for six days and nights.
Dr. Yu was sentenced to three years in prison again in 2005 for passing out Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party booklets to the public. She was held in ward eight. Ward chief Huang Qinghua took away Dr. Yu's daily toiletries because Ms. Yu refused to write a guarantee statement and a “confession.” Her rations were cut down to just a mouthful of rice and a few pieces of vegetables per meal, and she was not allowed to purchase toilet paper or change her clothes. She was denied restroom use and had soil her pants. Dr. Yu developed a chronic sore on her bottom as a result. She was later transferred to the "Training Team" and tortured by the criminal inmates. She was made to sit on a small stool and not allowed to sleep. If she dozed off, cold water was poured on her and her thighs and buttocks were kicked. For a long time, Dr. Yu was unable to keep her balance when standing, walking, and even sitting—she often tripped and fell and was extremely weak.
Dr. Yu never yielded to the abuse and she never gave up her belief. She was released in 2007 and became homeless. She was arrested again in 2012 for handing out pamphlets about Falun Gong in Donghai County, Jiangsu Province, sentenced to four years in prison, and is now in Nantong Prison. Dr. Yu is quiet, well mannered, and honest. She always thinks of others first. Her husband divorced her out of fear.
Internist
Dr. Li Aijun was a internist at Beijing Xiyuan Hospital. Her colleagues and patients had high regard for her professionalism and ethics. She was fired from the hospital in 2000 and became homeless because she persisted in practicing Falun Gong. Dr. Li was later sentenced to two years of forced labor and then sentenced to an additional nine years. She was in her forties at the time. In ward two in Beijing Women's Prison, she underwent brainwashing, and had to work in the sewing factory. She processed clothing for both export and prison inmates. She worked over 16 hours per day, from 6:00 a.m. until after 10:00 p.m.
Ultrasound Specialist
Dr. Yu Di was a clinician in the ultrasound department of Guanganmen Hospital in the Xuanwu District. She was sentenced to four years in prison for speaking up about the persecution of Falun Gong. She was in her thirties. She was in ward eight in Beijing Women's Prison.
Military Physician
Dr. Liu Cuifen, a Falun Gong practitioner living in the Xuanwu District, was a clinician in the military. She was sentenced to three years in prison in 2002. She was persecuted and tortured by ward chief Huang Qinghua in ward nine in Beijing Women's Prison.
Pediatrician
Dr. Dong Cui, also known as Dong Cuifang, was from Xingan Township, Gaocheng, Hebei Province. Dr. Dong worked at Beijing Shunyi District Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Dr. Dong and her fiancé, Mr. Shen Wenjie (29, a pilot at Beijing Capital Airport) were arrested in 2001 for passing out pamphlets about the persecution. They were both sentenced to five-year prison terms in 2002.
Dr. Dong was transferred to Beijing Women's Prison on March 11, 2003. She was locked up in solitary confinement in a counseling room in ward three. She was tortured in various ways, including having her legs bonded in a cross-legged sitting position and being deprived of sleep. She went on hunger strike during that time.
A prison guard instructed inmates Li Xiaobing, Li Xiaomei, Jin Hongwei, and two others to take Dr. Dong to an empty shower room on the morning of March 19, and beat her. Dr. Dong died a few hours later. Her body had black and blue bruises all over, her legs were swollen, and the muscle and bone were separated on her right shoulder. An autopsy by Beijing Legal Medical Identification Center determined that Dr. Dong was beaten to death. The prison bribed and coerced her family to withdraw their lawsuit. Under pressure and without the benefit of legal advice, Dr. Dong's parents withdrew their lawsuit. The prison said she died of “natural causes.” That year, Beijing Women's Prison boasted that they had had “no major accidents for many years.”
Radiologist
Dr. Zhang Jingying was a radiologist in a military hospital. She was sentenced to a four-year prison term in 2009 for speaking up about the unjust persecution of Falun Gong. She was in her forties at the time. She was imprisoned in ward one of Beijing Women's Prison. Ward chief Li Xiaona ordered the inmates to abuse Dr. Zhang. They cursed at her and kept her awake at night for over ten days at a time. She was seldom allowed to wash or use the toilet. She was beaten, slapped in the face, and starved. Dr. Zhang's hair turned gray within a few months and she became very weak.
Chinese Medicine Specialist
Dr. Teng Xiuyun specialized in Chinese medicine at Beijing Radio and Television Department Hospital. She graduated from Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical School. Dr. Teng had over thirty years of clinical and research experience, and had become an expert in the field of deafness and tinnitus. Dr. Teng was sentenced to seven years in prison for speaking up in public about the persecution of Falun Gong. She underwent brainwashing in ward one of Beijing Women's Prison.
Physician
Dr. Zhang Zeqiong is a native of Yunnan Province. She graduated from Beijing Chinese Medicine University. Her terminal illness was cured after she started practicing Falun Gong. She was sentenced to a four-year prison term in 2002 for mailing written materials regarding Falun Gong. She was in her thirties at the time. Dr. Zhang was subjected to brainwashing and forced labor. Her mother passed away during her imprisonment. Her husband divorced her out of fear of being persecuted himself.
Head Nurses
Ms. Xie Chunping was a Falun Gong practitioner living in the Chaoyang District of Beijing. She was working as a head nurse. Ms. Xie was sentenced to seven years in prison because she was outspoken about the persecution of Falun Gong. She was in her sixties at the time.
Ms. Li Suqin was a head nurse at Beijing Fangshan District Hospital. She was sentenced to a four-year prison term for being outspoken about the persecution of Falun Gong. She was in her forties at the time. Her husband was also sentenced to prison for the same reason. In ward nine in Beijing Women's Prison, Ms. Li was brainwashed and had to do slave labor, including washing wool and knitting sweaters.
Ms. Pan Hui was a head nurse in a Beijing hospital. She was sentenced to a five-year prison term for talking about the truth of the persecution of Falun Gong in public. She was in her fifties at the time. Under the supervision of ward chief Tian Fengqing, Ms. Pan was subjected to brainwashing in ward three of Beijing Women's Prison. Ms. Pan was sent to a forced labor camp after she was released because she continued to practice Falun Gong.
Ms. Li Cuiwen was a head nurse at the Ministry of Petroleum Hospital. She was sentenced to seven years in prison for talking about the truth of the persecution of Falun Gong in public. She was about fifty years old at the time. She underwent brainwashing in ward three of Beijing Women's Prison, under the supervision of ward chief Tian Fengqing.
Nurse
Ms. Liu Xiaojie was a nurse at Beijing Huairou County Hospital. She was sentenced to a seven-year prison term in 2002 for passing out Falun Gong pamphlets. She was in her thirties at the time. She was brainwashed in wards nine and four of Beijing Women's Prison. She was also made to do slave labor.
