(Minghui.org) The Bureau of Justice in China issues license renewals for attorneys in May of each year, and the regime is using this as a way to retaliate against lawyers who defend Falun Gong practitioners. Some of these lawyers include Mr. Zhang Chuanli, Mr. Lan Zhixue and Mr. Dong Qianyong in Beijing, and Mr. Zhang Keke in Wuhan. Mr. Zhang Keke is currently on a hunger strike to protest actions by the Wuhan Lawyer Association and the Bureau of Justice in Wuhan.
One human rights lawyer said on his blog, “I was beaten by police officers as soon as I showed my identity card. Although Falun Gong is demonized by the communist regime, I was amazed by the practitioners' kindness and calmness. Facing the regime's slander and suppression, Falun Gong practitioners have chosen the most peaceful way to protest in the past 14 years. My heart was purified each time I was in contact with them.”
In recent years, more and more human rights lawyers have started to defend Falun Gong practitioners, as they are seeing the injustice of what is happening in the persecution.
With the lawyers' assistance, many practitioners' families gained a better understanding of the law, and have realized that the freedom of belief is a basic human right and protected by the Constitution. They have helped out by appealing for the Falun Gong practitioners and even suing the parties involved in the persecution.
The regime's agents have tried to interfere with the lawyers in a multitude of ways. They conduct unlawful “safety inspections” on the lawyers and monitor their cell phones. Some lawyers have been detained and beaten, and are restricted from traveling overseas. Despite this, many lawyers continue to defend Falun Gong practitioners in court.
Mr. Gao Zhisheng, a well-known human rights lawyer, has been detained in Xinjiang for defending Falun Gong practitioners and openly criticizing the human rights situation in China. Mr. Jiang Tianyong and Mr. Tang Jitian's licenses were suspended due to their efforts in exposing the Jianshanjiang brainwashing center. Many more human rights lawyers are being threatened and intimidated by the Bureau of Justice and police agents.
