(Minghui.org) For practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted in China since 1999, a woman from Tangshan City, Hebei Province, was sentenced to nine years in prison. Not allowed to practice in prison, she developed uterine cancer, hypertension, and heart disease. After surgeries and chemotherapy, she was still denied medical parole and proper care. She was released in February 2018 after serving her full term.
Prior to the ordeal, she was repeatedly arrested, detained, subjected to brainwashing, shocked with electric batons, viciously beaten while tied to a chair, force-fed, and deprived of sleep by the authorities, also for practicing Falun Gong. Her family suffered enormous financial loss due to the surgeries she needed.
Police Torture Husband to Locate Wife
Ms. Wang used to work for a mining supply company in the Fengnan District. After she began practicing Falun Gong, her health conditions disappeared, including heart diseases, stomach problems, and a slipped disc.
On May 29, 2008, a dozen officers from Qianyingkuang Police Station broke into Ms. Wang’s home and ransacked it. She escaped and didn’t return home. To find her, the police tapped her family and relatives’ phones and frequently harassed them.
In their attempts to arrest Ms. Wang, the police repeatedly pressured her husband Dai Bao’an (who does not practice Falun Gong) by threatening his job. They also photographed him. Officers arrested him on July 29, 2008 and tortured him in the police station. They handcuffed him, slapped his face, and struck his legs with wooden bats for hours until the bats broke. He was detained in the Fengnan District Detention Center for 15 days.
Unable to find Ms. Wang, the police had her company fire her and continued to harass her husband and relatives.
Arrested and Sentenced on Falsified Charges
In February 2009, Ms. Wang and eight other Falun Gong practitioners visited a practitioner in Qianjin Prison. Officers from Qinghe Police Station in Beijing followed and arrested all of them. One officer handcuffed Ms. Wang and pulled her arms behind her neck as he hit and kicked her until the next morning. After she complained to a deputy chief about the brutality, four more officers came in to abuse and photograph her. She was transferred to Beijing Detention Center and held for seven months before being taken to the Xuanwu District Detention Center.
Ms. Wang and other practitioners were tried by Beijing First Intermediate Court on falsified charges. In January 2010, the nine practitioners were all found guilty. Ms. Wang was given nine years, while the other eight received between four and four-and-a-half years.
Ms. Wang was taken to Hebei Province Women’s Prison on March 30, 2010.
Tortured in Prison
Not allowed to do the Falun Gong exercises in prison, Ms. Wang’s former ailments recurred. Within six months, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. The prison took 14,000 yuan from her husband and did nothing until a month later when her symptoms worsened. She had two major surgeries and four rounds of chemotherapy within a month at the end of 2010.
After that, the prison authorities didn’t provide her with proper food or care, so her health deteriorated. They offered her medical parole in March 2012, but Tangshan Justice Bureau and other entities refused to take her because she “wasn’t a criminal but a Falun Gong practitioner.”
Ms. Wang was then placed in a recovery ward until her term ended because she was no longer able to work.
