(Minghui.org) Mr. Cai Chunpeng has been on a hunger strike for more than 500 days in protest of being detained for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. His family is now very worried about his health.
Mr. Cai, a 39-year-old senior information engineer in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, began the hunger strike right after his arrest on January 3, 2018 after being reported for distributing information about Falun Gong.
The guards at Baisha Detention Center chained his hands and feet to a bed frame and then inserted a feeding tube into his nose to force feed him, inflicting severe pain and injury.
Mr. Cai was sentenced to 1.5 years and fined 2,000 yuan on March 28, 2018 by Chenghai District Court. He was taken to Sihui Prison on April 23, 2018 and continued his hunger strike there.
While Mr. Cai was incarcerated for his faith, his father, Mr. Cai Qinxu, in his 70s, fell ill from the mental distress after repeatedly witnessing the persecution against his son. He passed away on November 17, 2018.
Prior to his latest arrest and sentencing, Mr. Cai was given two years of forced labor following his first arrest on September 23, 2011 for posting a sticker that said “Falun Dafa is good” on a telephone pole.
He was subjected to intensive brainwashing at Sanshui Forced Labor Camp. The guards once deprived him of sleep for a month and shocked him with high-voltage electric batons after he refused to renounce his faith.
After he was released from the labor camp, the police constantly harassed him and refused to return his ID and professional certificates, which caused many difficulties in his daily life.
