(Minghui.org) A Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province resident was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison, for distributing information materials about Falun Gong. She appealed the verdict, but the higher court ruled to reject her appeal in January 2022.
This is the second time that Ms. Meng Meizhen, around 60 years old, has been sentenced for her faith in Falun Gong. She was previously given three years in June 2012.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline with core values of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999
A surveillance camera recorded Ms. Meng in April 2020, distributing pamphlets about how the communist regime covered up the pandemic with similar tactics used in the persecution, and how Covid-19 patients recovered by reciting the auspicious phrases “Falun Dafa is good; Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance is good.”
Kong Yue and three other officers from the Wucheng District Domestic Security Office ransacked Ms. Meng’s home on April 17, 2020. Her Falun Gong books, informational materials, cellphone, laptop, and flash-drive were confiscated. She was interrogated in the basement of Chengzhong Police Station and released in the evening due to high blood pressure.
Ms. Meng was tried by the Wucheng District Court on June 28, 2021. She was accused of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization.” She refuted the allegation and argued that Falun Gong is practiced around the world and is only persecuted in China. Her lawyer also entered a not guilty plea for her.
Following her second hearing in early August 2021, the police attempted to take her into custody, but she was rejected admission again, still due to high blood pressure.
The judge held the third hearing on September 2, 2021. He threatened to directly take her to the prison after her next court appearance. Ms. Meng maintained that she didn’t violate any law by owing or distributing Falun Gong materials.
Ms. Meng was indeed taken to the detention center on November 16, then hours after she was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison. But the detention center refused to take her citing her high blood pressure.
Ms. Meng appealed with the Jinhua City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold her original verdict in mid-January 2022, still accusing her of owing Falun Gong materials at home. It was unclear whether she had been taken back into custody at the time of writing.
