(Minghui.org) When Ms. Zhang Juxian was carried out from the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison in October 2004, covered by a white sheet, her family thought she was dead. Luckily, she was still alive. But she was no longer the once healthy and bright woman. Due to the unimaginable torture in custody, she has suffered from severe mental illness since then.
Ms. Zhang, 59, used to work for the Basan Pumping Station in Dashiqiao City, Liaoning Province. She took up Falun Gong, a spiritual and meditation discipline, in 1997 and enjoyed the uplifting of mind and body. After the communist regime ordered a nationwide persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, she was fired from her job for upholding her faith. Her husband divorced her and given the custody of their child.
Ms. Zhang was arrested many times. She was held in a brainwashing center and served two labor camp terms, during which time she was forced to do intensive labor without pay, shocked with electric batons, and held in solitary confinement. She was also taken to a psychiatric hospital twice.
After she was arrested in late September 2002 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong, she held a hunger strike in the Dashiqiao Detention Center to protest the persecution, only to be force-fed feces and urine.
The local court sentenced Ms. Zhang to three years on December 27, 2002. The guards of Liaoning Province Women’s Prison tied her in a spread eagle position on the “death bed” torture device and force-fed her.

Although Ms. Zhang barely survived the torture, she suffered a mental collapse and has not recovered. She often wandered around on the street and picked food out of the dumpster. Some kindhearted people offered her clothes and food, but she usually didn’t take it. Due to her kind nature, she was often seen sweeping the street and cleaning the dumpster.
In recent years, her elderly mother tried to keep her at home and feed her some food. In 2022, her mother moved away and the locals haven’t seen Ms. Zhang on the street since.
