Ms. Zhang Chunjie was sentenced to three years in prison and taken to the No. 8 Ward in Jilin Province Women’s Prison on December 25, 2023. On December 31, prison officials notified her family that Ms. Zhang was ill and asked them to deposit 20,000 yuan for medical treatment.

Her family members went to the hospital. The prison staff members shifted all the responsibility and risk to her family and told the doctor to have a talk with them. The doctor asked her family to sign an agreement, which turned the situation into a hospital-patient agreement, and the hospital would bill her family for treatment.
